Sea Pansy - A Soft Coral

A coral is collection of animals living together cooperatively. The little white spots are actually feeding polyps that filter the water so the sea pansy can eat. The white polyps extrude outward and look like tiny aneomnes when they are feeding under the water. The purple soft skeleton is actually another LARGE polyp, which holds the rest of them, and anchors it in the sand. This anchoring part is called the peduncle. Apparently, if you find one and handle it at night, it will give off brilliant blue luminescence! It is eaten by the striped sea slugs. I have yet to find one of those...
